Shipping Internationally - The Complexities Made Simple!!!

When you ship documents and packages to international countries, there are very rigid rules and regulations everyone must follow. Each country has their own laws that are administered by their Customs department. Not following the rules or trying to ship something that you are not supposed to can be very expensive.

8 Potential Problems You Could Discover Too Late For Your International Shipping

  1. Some countries have stipulations on specific commodities (example: firearms, liquor, tobacco, pharmaceuticals, clothing, personal items, etc.) that cannot be shipped into the country.
  2. Each country has its own rules on gifts vs. sale items as well as the value of each item. Specific invoicing and permits must be obtained.
  3. Some countries have different definitions as to what is considered a document and what is not. Some countries consider a passport a document and others consider it something else.
  4. Some items are allowed in one country are not allowed in another country. Example: Dominican Republic prohibits used electro domestic goods (microwaves, toasters, TV sets, stereos, food processors, washer & dryer, etc.)
  5. There are limitations on quantities of specific commodities. Example: Mexico will not allow more than 10 pieces of clothing to be sent into the country.
  6. There are very specific issues where they will not allow items to enter the country that were made in countries like Israel, Iran and even China and Hong Kong.
  7. Most countries will not allow you to ship “personal effects” into the country unless you can confirm the items are for personal use only and that you have owned them for at least 6 months.
  8. Each country has different weight and size limits they will allow into the country.

In International Shipping,
Not Following The Laws Is Expensive

Not knowing the laws of the other country is no excuse. Having the right tools to determine what each country’s laws are important in saving you money and aggravation. Our online systems are updated regularly so we can lessen the chance of having problems getting your shipments to their end destination, wherever it is.

All packages are x-rayed after they leave the store to make sure there is nothing illegal or dangerous. The people responsible for making sure everything is right are very good at what they do. While they don’t miss much, we still have people who try to get away with shipping things they shouldn’t. One person tried shipping a passport directly back to his family member in Haiti. It was stopped at customs at the country it was going to and returned to the customer. The reason: passports have to be sent to an embassy, then to the receiver. Otherwise it is illegal. Had the customer been up front with what he was sending, we could have prevented this from happening. Another customer tried to send tobacco and alcohol to a friend. After x-raying the package, the authorities determined that the contents were illegally being sent and they were confiscated by customs. Not only did the customer loose the goods he was shipping, but he also lost the cost of the shipping. The downside of getting caught is that you pay to send it there, if it does not follow the law, you may have to pay any customs storage fees and pay to get it sent back. In addition, if you want to resend the package correctly, you have to pay again.

The moral of the story is to not try to cheat the system, be honest about what you are sending. You also need to make sure you know the laws of the country you are sending to.
